Description
Purchasing a bicycle is a difficult task. From fit to function, comfort to safety, the traditional bike selection process can take days to weeks to complete. Trek, a leading producer of bikes and accessories out of Waterloo, WI, needed a way to streamline this process for customers in their traditional retail locations.
We partnered with the Trek team to design and produce a permanent store fixture utilizing augmented reality, motion tracking, touch, and recording technology to assist each shopper with their unique specifications.
These technologies, co-created with Chicago experiential design firm Next/Now Agency, guide shoppers through Trek’s state-of-the-art “Precision Fit Process.” While standing at the fixture, customers are taken on an interactive journey that (1) surveys their intended bicycle use; (2) scans and measures their body angles, movements, and riding patterns in-real-time; (3) provides custom bike options based on data as well as personal preference; and (4) makes additional product and accessory recommendations.
We designed this tool to complement the shoppers’ experience beyond brick and mortar. Whether beginning their journey in-store or online, and made sure the fixture provided a seamless way to explore options, validate choices, and make purchases. Shoppers can download and send themselves (via text, email or print) results gleaned from using the tool in-store, or they can begin narrowing down selections online first and come to a retail location to confirm their decisions with the added assistance of a store associate.
The success of the project’s original rollout led to an expansion of five stores. The Precision Fit Workstation will be incorporated into all upcoming Trek retail locations across the globe.
